Intoxicating
Author: Steve Pettengill - Sea of Tranquility
Looking for something completely different? Try Mark Van Overmeire's world music CD Impresiones. Van Overmeire is a Belgian musician who spent four years in South America. His personal journey is communicated through the musical travelogue that is Impresiones.
Van Overmeire’s musical influences are not easy to detect, but if Peter Gabriel had recorded The Pat Metheny Group at Real World Studios, Impresiones might be the result. If I could only use one word to describe the outcome, I might use the term intoxicating. Van Overmeire and his band effortlessly combine jazz, world, folk and even classical music. In lesser hands, such disparate musical shifts would be a major distraction, but Impresiones treats these stylistic differences as if they somehow belong together. Read more...
An adventurous musical travelogue
Author: John Henry - Audiophile Audition
Van Overmeire is a composer, classical guitarist and percussionist from Belgium, and his new world music CD was influenced by both Yo-Yo Ma and Pat Metheny. While this is closer to what one generally thinks of as world music than the Garbarek disc above, it still displays plenty of original thinking and sounds.
A four-year stay in South America was the main stimulus for the album concept. He experienced breathtaking impressions of this area and has translated them into a colorful and diverse chapters in a musical journey. Read more...
Innovative
Author: Marie Asner - The Phantom Tollbooth
Oh, to be able to travel the world and then compose music about one's travels! This is the life of composer Mark Van Overmeire. When I read the program notes regarding his life in South America for several years and absorbing the atmosphere of this continent to enrich his musical knowledge, I decided to stop reading and listen to the six-track world music CD right away.
My idea of reflections in water was right, but I wouldn't have matched it with the high-altitude Lake Titicaca. This is what Overmeire tries to accomplish in this album. He chooses a location in South America and then describes it through music. If you've traveled there, fine; if not, the general flavor may appear to you. Except for the first piece, "Cotopaxi," which I found not as interesting as the rest of the selections, the other five pieces are innovative. Read more...
Wide, emotional, complex and simple at the same time
Author: Filipe Santos - Rua fm
What a pleasant surprise! Impresiones has captured my attention from the beginning, making me listen to the story of that journey till the end of the album! And leaving me wondering about that trip. Even though in this case the genuine nature of the music sort of stops the process of starting, the mind always compares. Pat Metheny comes in some parts, maybe because he also is a "jazz" storyteller. I recommend this album to everyone! By the same reason I cannot describe it musically: it's wide, emotional, complex and simple at the same time, and mostly, very beautiful.
Honest music with rewarding moments
Author: Vasja Ivanovski - 94.1 fm Radio 2
Excellent introspective music based on Mark's personal experiences with themes of the world. Expertly played, this music is an inspiration and joy to listen. It has a soothing effect on the listener. CD's like this one are rare occurrences these days, it's honest music that requires attention and offers rewarding moments.
Smooth, educational and inspiriting
Author: Rol James - AmsterJammin
Mark Van Overmeire's 2004 album release 'Impressions' is a diary of tracks influenced by Mark's journey through South America. On face value this album cannot be the sound of a European! Mark has achieved a pivotal point in the production of impro jazz. Tracks like 'La Danza de Los Emigrates' and 'A Bokher Un A Meydl' show clearly the collaboration and pure mixture of influences from different corners of the globe. 'Impressions' is smooth, educational and inspiriting.
